Mumble Dictation needs a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 14.2 or later. We strongly recommend 16GB of memory or more; 24GB or more gets the best results. Intel Macs are not supported.
Memory
Everything in Mumble Dictation runs on local models, so memory decides how much your Mac can handle:
On a Mac with 8GB to 16GB, the models compete with your everyday apps for
memory, which can slow your Mac down and use more battery. Dictation still
works and stays private, but for a smooth experience we strongly recommend
16GB or more.
Disk space
The models download once, right after install:
- Voice models: about 2GB. Dictation is ready as soon as these finish.
- Language model: about 3.4GB (16GB Macs) or about 5GB (the higher-quality option for 24GB+ Macs). It powers cleanup and AI Actions and finishes downloading in the background.
Plan for roughly 6GB of free disk space in total. Models live inside the app’s own folder and are removed when you delete the app’s data.
Internet
You need a connection to download the app and the models, and for the online voice actions (Open, Ask, GIF). Everyday dictation, cleanup, and the other AI Actions work offline once the models are installed.
